    Before-and-after rewrites

    Example 1 — splitting a run-on sentence

Before (Flesch 28): 'Despite the fact that the report was completed in advance of the deadline, several of the recommendations contained within it were not actioned by the leadership team.' After (Flesch 71): 'The report was finished early. But leadership did not act on several of its recommendations.'

Example 2 — removing passive voice

Before (Flesch 41): 'The new policy was implemented by the HR department in order to address concerns that had been raised by employees.' After (Flesch 68): 'HR rolled out the new policy to address employee concerns.'

    Example 3 — replacing jargon

Before (Flesch 32): 'We leveraged a holistic, omnichannel methodology to operationalize stakeholder engagement.' After (Flesch 74): 'We used one plan across every channel to keep stakeholders involved.'

    Example 4 — front-loading the answer

Before: A 250-word paragraph that ends with the conclusion. After: 'Yes — short sentences raise readability scores. Here is why and how much.' followed by the same evidence in scannable bullets. The Flesch score barely moves; the snippet win is immediate.

    Readability examples FAQ

How much can a single rewrite change a Flesch score?

A focused rewrite typically lifts the Flesch score by 20–40 points without losing meaning, often by splitting sentences and removing passive voice.

Should I copy these patterns directly?

Use them as templates, not scripts. Apply the technique to your own writing rather than the exact words.

Are AI tools good at this kind of rewrite?

Yes — AI is strong at sentence-level rewrites. Always verify the rewrite with a readability checker so you know it actually scored higher.
